Mary Pilcher-Cook Files for Re-Election
Senator Mary Pilcher-Cook (R-Shawnee) filed for re-election on Tuesday, formally signaling her decision to seek her third term in the Kansas Senate. Pilcher-Cook, who represents the 10th District, is a leading voice for principled conservatism in the Legislature.
"During my eight years in the Senate, I've witnessed a gradual transition from liberal to conservative governance in our state government. From establishing a culture of life to allowing Kansans to keep more of what they earn, we've made significant strides on a number of important issues. However, these efforts are now under attack, and we must be diligent and not reverse course," she said.
Pilcher-Cook's extensive record of defending conservative principles is unparalleled in the Kansas Senate, particularly on issues such as health care, life-saving therapies, protecting the sanctity of life, defending liberty, and fighting for limited government. She has also been a consistent champion of local control in education, keeping more funding in Johnson County and ensuring dollars reach the classroom. Pilcher-Cook said her decision to seek a third term stems from a desire to keep fighting on those issues.
"The next four years are critical for determining whether we continue to stand up for life and liberty, or whether we reverse course and go back to the dark days when Kansas had high taxes, bloated government, and was known as the abortion capital of the world. We also repealed the cumbersome school finance formula and are working towards a new formula founded on local control and having the dollar follow the child. It is critical we remain on the right path, and I am determined to ensure we do."
Mary Pilcher-Cook was originally elected to the Kansas House in 2000 and again in 2004. She won election to the Kansas Senate in 2008 and was re-elected by comfortable margins in 2012. Since 2013, she has served as Chair of the Public Health & Welfare Committee. She also currently serves on Judiciary, Commerce, and Assessment & Taxation.
The 10th Senate District currently composes all of Shawnee, Lake Quivira, a large portion of Merriam and two precincts in Overland Park.
